Why we choose open-source for every project

Open-source isn't just a question of cost. It's a strategic choice that impacts the quality, durability and independence of your projects.

Why we choose open-source for every project

At Pixee Play, we make a deliberate choice for every new project: to prioritize open-source technologies. This is neither an ideological dogma nor simply a matter of cost—it is a carefully considered strategic decision that benefits our clients in the long run. Here’s why, and how this philosophy translates into practice in our projects.

What exactly is open-source?

Open-source software is software whose source code is publicly accessible, freely usable, modifiable, and redistributable. The most common open-source licenses (MIT, Apache 2.0, GPL) guarantee these freedoms while protecting the authors.

Open-source is not synonymous with “free” or “amateur.” The world’s largest companies (Google, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix) contribute massively to open-source and build their infrastructures on it. Linux, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, React, Next.js, Node.js—all are open-source.

Benefit #1: Transparency and Auditability

With proprietary software, you trust the vendor without being able to verify what’s happening “under the hood.” With open-source:

  • The code is auditable: thousands of developers worldwide review and test the code, which improves the detection of bugs and vulnerabilities.
  • No black box: you know exactly how your data is processed, stored, and transmitted.
  • Easier compliance: security and compliance audits (GDPR, SOC 2) are simplified when the code is transparent.

Benefit #2: Technological independence

Vendor lock-in is one of the most underestimated risks in digital projects. With a proprietary solution:

  • If the vendor raises its prices, you have no choice.
  • If the vendor goes bankrupt or discontinues the product, your project is at risk.
  • If you need a specific feature, you’re at the mercy of the vendor’s roadmap.

With open-source, you retain full control. You can switch providers, host on any cloud, fork the code if necessary, and tailor the solution to your exact needs.

Benefit #3: Quality and Innovation

Major open-source projects benefit from contributions from thousands of developers around the world. This collective intelligence produces:

  • High-quality code, peer-reviewed and tested in a variety of environments.
  • Frequent updates with rapid security patches (often within hours for critical vulnerabilities).
  • Rapid innovation driven by a diverse community of contributors.

Benefit #4: Total Cost of Ownership

The financial argument is often the first one cited, but it deserves to be nuanced:

  • No licenses: the software itself is free, which significantly reduces the cost of entry.
  • Flexible hosting: you can choose the hosting option that best fits your budget and needs.
  • However: open-source requires skills for installation, configuration, and maintenance. Support from a specialized service provider is often necessary.

Ultimately, for medium to large-scale projects, the TCO of open-source is consistently lower than that of equivalent proprietary solutions.

Our open-source stack at Pixee Play

Here are the open-source technologies we use on a daily basis:

  • Frontend: React, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, Radix UI
  • Backend: Node.js, Python, Supabase (PostgreSQL)
  • E-commerce: PrestaShop, WooCommerce, Medusa
  • ERP: Odoo Community Edition
  • DevOps: GitHub Actions, Docker, Nginx
  • Monitoring: Sentry, Grafana, Prometheus
  • AI: Hugging Face, LangChain, Ollama for local models

Each of these tools is supported by an active community, extensive documentation, and an ecosystem of plugins and extensions.

When open-source isn’t the right answer

We aren’t dogmatic. There are cases where a proprietary solution is preferable:

  • Very specific needs: certain sectors (finance, healthcare) have certification requirements that only specialized vendors can meet.
  • Small teams without technical expertise: a turnkey SaaS solution may be more suitable than open-source software that you have to maintain yourself.
  • Critical time-to-market: sometimes, a ready-to-use proprietary solution allows for a faster launch.

In these cases, we are honest with our clients and guide them toward the best solution for their specific situation.

Contributing to open source: our commitment

Using open-source is one thing; contributing to it is another. At Pixee Play, we are committed to giving back to the community:

  • We publish modules and packages from our client projects (with their consent) under the MIT license.
  • We systematically report bugs and suggestions to the maintainers of the projects we use.
  • We participate in code reviews and discussions on the GitHub repositories of the tools in our stack.
  • We financially sponsor critical projects via GitHub Sponsors and Open Collective.

This contribution isn’t purely altruistic: it allows us to better understand the tools we use, influence their evolution, and recruit talent that shares our values.

Conclusion

Open source is not a trend: it is a software development model that has proven its superiority in terms of quality, security, flexibility, and sustainability. At Pixee Play, we build on these solid foundations to offer our clients sustainable, scalable, and vendor-independent solutions. This is our commitment to healthy and well-managed digital projects.
